This is the second in a series of case studies about the work of the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) in Lesvos. Amish is from a country where asylum seekers have an average recognition rate at first instance of below 25% in the EU. As an individual identified as non-vulnerable, he was set to receive an admissibility interview to establish whether or not he could be removed from Greece. In advance of the interview, Amish received advice and support from GCR lawyers. The caseworkers conducting the interview were interrogatory and repeatedly expressed their distrust for Amish’s testimony. The interview itself was extremely long and Amish suffered acute stress. Due to the briefing by GCR lawyers in advance and interventions in the course of the interview, he was ultimately accorded subsidiary protection.
