After careful consideration, the trustees have concluded that our key projects will be best positioned to thrive if they are supported within another organisation whose infrastructure and resources can sustain them long term.
We realise you may have some questions and hope to answer some of the more frequently asked ones below.
1. General Closure
- Why is Lawyers Against Poverty (LAP) closing?
The trustees have decided that LAP’s key projects will thrive best under another organisation due to funding challenges. This ensures their long-term sustainability. - When will LAP officially close?
The closure process will be completed by 31 December 2026. - Is LAP closing because of financial difficulties?
LAP is closing through a solvent liquidation, meaning all obligations can be met. The decision is strategic, not due to insolvency.
2. Projects & Legacy
- What will happen to LAP’s key projects (JLAP and LCS)?
These projects are being transferred to A4ID, which has the infrastructure to continue and grow them. - Will the refugee confidence sessions continue?
Yes, they are part of the Legal Confidence Sessions (LCS) and will be supported under A4ID. - How will LAP’s legacy be preserved?
A closing impact summary and archive of key documents will be shared with members and sector peers.
3. Donations & Membership
- What happens to my current donations?
Donations will continue to support LAP’s work until closure. Members will be encouraged to transfer their donations to A4ID. Donations will be accepted until Spring 2026. After that, members will be asked to cease or redirect them. - What happens to surplus funds?
Any remaining funds will be distributed according to LAP’s charitable objectives. - Will my membership automatically transfer to A4ID?
No, but members will be invited to join A4ID’s mailing list and community.
4. Governance & Compliance
- Is LAP meeting all legal requirements for closure?
Yes. Trustees are filing closure documents with the Charity Commission, Companies House, and HMRC, and ensuring compliance with GDPR and financial regulations. - What happens to LAP’s data and records?
Personal data will be securely deleted in line with GDPR. Key governance and financial records will be archived digitally for at least six years.
5. Partners & Volunteers
- How will volunteers be informed?
Volunteers will receive clear communication about the closure timeline and opportunities to continue supporting projects under A4ID. - What should funders and partners expect?
Funders and partners will be notified directly and signposted to A4ID for continuity of collaboration. - Will there be a farewell event?
Yes, a celebratory closure event is planned in 2026 to honour contributions and impact.
6. Communications
- Where can I find updates?
Closure updates will be posted on LAP’s website, social media channels, and via member emails. - Will LAP’s website and social media remain online?
They will be maintained temporarily with closure notices, then archived or redirected to A4ID.
7. Contact
- Who can I contact with questions?
Please email director@lawyersagainstpoverty.org for further information during the transition period.
