To mark the Day of the Endangered Lawyer, LAP is joining forces with Peace Brigades International (PBI) and the Alliance for Lawyers at Risk to reflect on the privileges enjoyed by UK lawyers and shine a light on those paying a higher price to defend the rule of law around the world.
Lawyers in regions where the rule of law is weak and who challenge those responsible for human rights violations pay an extremely high price – becoming targets of intimidation and repression simply due to the nature of the cases they take on. They find that they are routinely obstructed, followed, watched, harassed, subjected to spurious prosecutions and in some cases killed or ‘forcibly disappeared’.
Over the past year, PBI has been working with networks of pro bono lawyers to identify the barriers to the work of human rights defenders working to protect the rule of law, and how to best strengthen their capacities so they can overcome them. We will hear from these defenders and from representatives from the international community about what more can be done to protect lawyers at risk.
The webinar will be chaired by first president of the UK Supreme Court Lord Phillips and feature a screening of the latest film produced by Manu Valcarce on the challenges faced by lawyers globally.
