Upcoming: Advancing Women’s Rights Through Strategic Litigation and Other Tools

Many women in the world today suffer disadvantage and discrimination, marginalisation and violence. One in three will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime and only 52% of women who are married or in a relationship freely make decisions about contraception and healthcare. Globally, 750 million women and girls were married before 18 and as many as 200 million have undergone FGM.

Join us on Wednesday 28 November (18:30-21:00 at Baker McKenzie, 100 New Bridge Street, London EC4V 6JA) for a consideration of the tools we can use to advance and assert women’s rights. We will hear from Meghan Campbell, Deputy Director of the Oxford Human Rights Hub and Lecturer at Birmingham University Law School, whose current work is focused on the use of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in addressing the harms of gender-based poverty.

We will also hear from Emily Blower, a member of our women’s rights working group, who will take us through a significant case initiated by the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) against Nigeria on behalf of Mary Sunday, a victim of domestic violence, and supported with funding from Lawyers Against Poverty. We will show a short video featuring Gaye Sowe, the Executive Director of the IHRDA, in which he considers the case in more detail and whether strategic litigation is an effective tool in the fight to end violence against women.
